haha, yeah we had that too in school.
We wanted to do a "Lion King" musical here in holland. But some company had already bought the rights (it even hadn't been performed yet :O ) .
So, we called it: "Hakuna Matata" and everything was fine!

This year we are doing Beauty and the Beast, but we call it: Belle and the beast (which is a combination of the english title and the Dutch title)
and everything is fine again.

so, i suggest, post a performance, and call it "fear of hights" and there you go! xD

no it isn't... we call that taking something and giving it a new name while claiming it your own... no one will bother suing you for stealing a little trick and calling it your own, but EVERYONE will bash you on for the REST. OF. YOUR. LIFE.( or, it least until you take the video off)

The problem is that magic is mostly done in front of real people, not on camera. For laymen in real life it's completely OK to claim a trick your own, but it's pointless because usually we not say "I'll show you my own creation...", only if we do for example a gambling demonstration.

Not even in gambling demonstrations would that make sense, but you're right. Sometimes it could suit your patter though, for instance saying the trick you're about to do was invented by Houdini and this is your tribute to him, but those credits don't have to be true at all (especially not when the actual creator isn't known by any of your spectators).

I think we should make some sort of list of ethics so that people wouldn't have to ask or doubt whether something is ethical or not. I might actually do that soon.

what i was talking about was the renaming of something, not the claiming of something, and since live spectators won't care what name the trick they see is called by, you won't see them or anyone else trying to bash you for renaming a trick and saying that you made that trick. if it's a video, then people will want to know the name, and if you give the wrong one, you'll get negative comments( a.k.a being bashed)
