Renaming tricks isn't suable because tricks aren't copyrighted or patented (with the exception of a few stage illusions). However, renaming plays definitely is suable since scripts are very solidly protected by law (similar to written stories, formats of TV shows and characters), but I doubt people would sue schools for that.. unless it's a huge school and there is a lot of profit made but usually that isn't the case. It would cost more money to sue schools for their musicals than what you could possibly get out of it.
However, this isn't about laws, this is about ethics and I don't see anything bad about performing tricks you have been able to figure out from trailers apart from the trailers themselves allowing you to figure out those tricks. |

I agree, Mark.
its ethically correct to perform a trick when you know how it's done (that is essentially the case here) its unethical to perform a trick online (for the masses), so badly, that you revealed it. |

The problem is that magic is mostly done in front of real people, not on camera. For laymen in real life it's completely OK to claim a trick your own, but it's pointless because usually we not say "I'll show you my own creation...", only if we do for example a gambling demonstration.

I think we should make some sort of list of ethics so that people wouldn't have to ask or doubt whether something is ethical or not. I might actually do that soon. |

Yeah, Mark, I think it would be a good idea if you make a video on it as well. That should help a lot more than just posting it on here too.

I feel they should encourage people to try and figure it out. This sparks new ideas and advances magic. The idea that anyone can buy a trick ticks me off. I feel that if money was not an issue as it is... Magic would never be revealed for any price, and people who truly love the art would figure out their own ways to do it. T11 and Ellusionist are ruining magic, by changing the focus from being smart and witty to figure something out to I have to get $50 then I will know the secret...
So now magics not "how do i outsmart the other?" like in "The Prestige" Its how do i get the money to buy a trick. |
